Just saw a rather groovy burgandy corvette on the road to Cheltenham with no plate at all on the front and a red and white one with writing (too small to read) on the back. Would be really interested if anyone could explain this to me please

The red and white plates are known as trade plates. These are special plates that have their own tax disc. this allows garages and traders to move untaxed/unregistered vehicles around the country.
The one you saw probably hadn't be registered yet or was being test driven by a potential customer.
These plates have certain restrictions to their use to prevent people from never taxing a car (eg you can't park a car with them on, you have to be moving it between premises).

The red and white plate you saw was a trade plate. It would have had another one on the dash board. Vehicles MUST display number plates of a standard size if it is used on the road. You can buy smaller plates but these are 'show' plates and are illegal for road use

Trade Plates are red on white, same size as normal. Sounds like a foreign (possibly US) plate.

In the U.S. certain states do not have a front plate only one to the rear, i suspect the car you saw was an import? and a garage was driving it from maybe dock to garage? pretty sure to use it over here they will need to put a front plate on?

Only if displaying a trade plate which is what you saw the trade plate is registered to a particular dealer/garage

If it's a visitor from USA it's fine, as some American states only allow rear plates. If it's an import it's only allowed a short time as it's being re-tested and licenced for UK use. OK.

only if you were driving down the road and it just fell off... is the only time I am aware of, provided that a valid plate was assigned to it in the first place, along with a valid registration, as proof...
