My take on the role of the director has become much clearer since I took a theatre course. The director isn't just some loud guy who tells the actors what to do. He is the man responsible for co-ordinating all the contributing artists. The lighting guy may be good, the scene designer may be good, the costume designer may be good, but unless you have 1 person's unifying vision they will have a difficult time meshing with each other. The director is the man with the vision who keeps everything running smoothly, on track, and unified.

Well I always thought the film Director was just some dude with a baseball cap and yell really depressing stuff to the bad actors. But in reality a director's importance is just to ensure that the film is done to the best of the film crew's abilities.

It is his or her vision of what the screenwriter has written....he is responsible for all the aspects of the film; photography, editing, costumes, scenery, casting etc. Though the producers and studio can override his decision. That's why when a director doesn't put out a film in his own vision or it was edited for content, he will release a "director's cut" version.

The director controls the tone of a film. "Pretty Woman" was directed as a comedy. However the screenwriter intended it to be a drama. It's all in the eye of the director.

the director interacts with the actors and guides the crew with his/hers vision of how the film is imagined, although I believe the director of photography deserves equal praise, as some films look wonderful even when the acting is poor and the story sucks!

well think of the script of a movie and all of the thousand ways it can be filmed, it can be played. the director's job is to choose all of that he must tell the actors how to play, the set decorators how to decorate, the cinematographer how he wants the scene to look like, and of course he must set the cameras, chose how many will be used, which shots will be taken.

Plans, budgets, hires a office staff and casts coordinate hundfreds of people and thier responsibilites daily and film the project. Then he/she is involved in distribution, and post production and marketing of his vision....and if all works out, he is allowed to sleep for a hour or two. Other than that ...not too much
