I'm just curious. Personally, I think marijuana should be legal rather than alcohol. From personal experience from both (not anymore though) the effects of marijuana are WAY less severe than alchohol. Please only answer if you actually know what you are talking about - that means personal experience.

Just because I want to answer my own question. Alcohol should be history. Yeah, if people want to make it and use it at home...whatever, but in clubs, etc. No. My reasoning is...when have you ever seena stoned person get pissed off and lose control? Umm...I know I haven't. And it has been medically proven that it isn't linked to lung cancer...so there goes the tar theory...besides, it isn't enhanced (usually) like tobacco. You can drive while stoned (unless you are a rookie b/c then the effects are greater) but alcohol is just bad... I'd rather be lazy and have the munchies while relaxing than getting drunk and saying things I regret (because sadly, most people can't do one or two drinks ONLY). Okay, there's my view. Vote for the mellow....not the other crap.

They tried prohibition in the 30s. It didn't work. Prohibition with marijuana doesn't work either. They should legalize marijuana, and keep alchohol legal. Having a prohibition does not deter people from gettng something if they really want it.
History has told us that again and again and again.
But we are an obtuse, obstinate, hard-headed people!

marijuana should be legalized for a thousand different reasons, but the biggest one is that it just is not bad for you. the only reason its illegal is some smear campaigns against it in the early-middle 20th century that were totally based off of lies. the government just got swept up on it and bam its a schedule 1 drug. as soon as we get some of the newer generations into senate seats then marijuana will definately be legalized. there is really no reason it should be treated any differently than alcohol. yes, there's going to be a small percentage of the population that abuses it, but thats going to happen with any mind-altering substance. the other 95% of the population will happily smoke bud and cause no problems. people will no longer have to buy off the street, which will cut down on gang/drug-related violence. the marijuana industry will explode. its already the #1 cash crop in california. imagine the money there would be in the marijuana industry; it would definately rival that of big alcohol. the benefits outweigh the negatives by a long shot

Yes, marijuana should be legalized. Definitely. There aren't many downsides to legalizing pot. I don't believe pot to be a gateway drug any more than I believe beer to be a gateway drug to hard liquor. It is a personality type: those who are hard drug users would be that way regardless of pot.

I don't think alcohol should be outlawed because it's impractical. Alcohol causes way, way more problems with people but outlawing it wouldn't work. Besides, I like to have a drink now and again.

From personal experience, I must dissagree. The effects of alchohol are immediate and eminently enjoyable, whereas the delayed effects of bud give you (me) more time to get in a difficult position. It's much easier to tell how drunk you are than how high you are. And alchohols effects have been blown hugely out of proportion- the only societal problems caused can be fixed by locking up bullies and getting drunks off the road. For a person with normal-strong natural genetic alchohol tolerance, it takes upwards of 10 years of steady, seriously hard drinking before they get physically addicted. Please believe me- I know what the hell I'm talking about. In my experience, bud causes many more long term problems, including one friend of mine who gets the shakes and can't eat if he goes more than 4 days. Do I think they both should be legal? Yeah. But am I blind to the bad points of weed use? No. It has over twice as much tar and Co as tobacco, that favorite scapegoat. It lowers your IQ (in medical tests) much faster than alchohol does. I believe the main reason people don't like alchohol is because they think of it as something stupid rednecks and white trash punks use, not hip, stylish people. And I know the dangers of booze, too. I was born without the gag reflex that saves you from alchohol poisoning by making you puke. But I still drink, I'm just carefull. I don't put away 2 gallons of red wine or a fifth of Windsor a night, anymore. Personally, I could do without weed. After about a year, I stopped, because weed just made me stupid and depressed. Booze has never done that.

The issue with marijuana is that it can be a stepping stone to other more dangerous drugs. Many people that only do pot deny this but I have seen numerous cases where maijuana has been a dangerous start of a bad addiction. So, no, I don't think it should be legalized.

Alchohol can also be dangerous, but it is so deep into our society, it would be almost impossibe to make it illegal.

The DEA and the courts are making too much money keeping these drugs illegal and keeping the "war on drugs" going. Thus they will never make them legal (and lose their jobs).

The smart thing to do is make all recreational drugs legal and then tax them like crazy and regulate the quality, like tobacco. Sure some will still overdose, but the US will make money to blow in another area like Iraq.

I don't drink or smoke any more but do think marijuana should be legal. As far as illegalizing alcohol, look at history as see the fuss that made when they tried it before, don't think it would work.
