i was wondering how do you tell where the wifi signal is coming from when you get one on your laptop or pda or whatever your using.

You can't really. You could walk around with the wireless network details open and see where the signal gets stronger and weaker and narrow down a general direction, but that's about it.

Even with proper equipment, you need 2 sources to triangulate a position.

The simplest way on your PC laptop is to move your mouse down to the taskbar and over the icon ,bottom right which indicates your wireless, and you may see a box come up with the details you are after.It will show the ssid or name of the wireless signal,and other stuff.

As you get closer to the source, the signal should go up. Same if you move away. Another way to test is to put a big object in the way and see if it blocks the signal. A metallic object would work best. i.e. a sheet of metal.
