You know if I live to be 100 I'll never understand why so many people slack Bono off for being charitable and concerned with the general state of the wold. I guess people are just naturally cynical.

I personally respect the man a great deal... not only for his charitable contributions but for just being a great singer and for fronting a great band. Not too many musicians have been able to sustain a career as long as he has and still remain relevant. Bono isn't just an old-school rocker who's still hanging on by a thread... he is legitimately one of the biggest names in the business. He is extrordinarily talented and exceptionally intelligent. I don't think it's an accident he's still so popular after so many years... I think most people see that he's for real and more importantly, he means what he says and puts his money and his actions where his mouth is.

But people still want to make fun, call him a prick and claim he's a hypocrate and a mindless celebrity trying to save an aging career by tagging his name onto charities and causes. The truth is, Bono has done more for world peace and unity than our current President has. He deserves credit and not the nonsensical rantings of cynical malcontents who just want to take a proverbial crap on any decent act a person commits.

That's just my opinion. Oh yeah... and The Edge rocks too!

I think he has a great voice. He is also a good songwriter. With the Edge's great guitar work, the driving drums and the rest of U2s artistry, Bono has created some the greatest music of the last twenty five years. I think that Bono is sincere about his service work. He has really helped raise awareness of extreme poverty. What other artist has met with Popes, Presidents, and other world leaders?

Bono is "Mr. Cool". He's a celebrity and he uses this status to try to make change with Third World poverty - however, I think that there are more serious things to change in the world than poverty (such as global warming - which will ultimately affect us all!). He ranks high with the powerful, influential people of the world (rubbing elbows with world leaders). He is inspirational yet, the celebrity status almost makes his message unrealistic or unattainable. He has a wonderful voice and U2 is a band that produces music that makes you feel real good. Anyone who doesn't like Bono seem to not like him because he preaches this or that - they can't take a celebrity telling them get beyond themselves and think of others who are less fortunate.

Unless I actually meet the man the only impression I have is from the media whores who report on him. Therefore I think he is just like any star, unknowable. Focus on the people around you and the world will be a better place.

Mouth first, brain second (if ever).

I'm not a great fan of U2 and to be honest, I don't necessarily think that pop music is the most appropriate vehicle for politics and religion. People who are fans of the music and 'support' the group get dragged along with the politics without seeing the issues independently. I don't think it is appropriate to use celebrity as a vehicle in this way. Pop stars aren't usually exactly mensa members, lets face it.

I've been a U2 fan for 10+ years. He's a great singer /songwriter but he's starting to annoy me with his preaching! Honestly the last U2 concert I was at I was tempted to yell out "Shut UP and sing the effin' song!!!"

well meaning prat! no, i take that back. he seems genuinely commited to alleviating poverty and hunger, and if he uses his fame to publicise the issue, then I admire him for that. maybe he is also doing it to get an even bigger ego and notoriety for himself, but that's ok if he does some real good to reduce suffering in the 3rd world. unlike most talentless celebs who just want to be famous for no reason, and just spend all their time getting their mugs in the rags and mags. he is also a great lyricist and songwriter, so all in all not a prat at all, but a top bloke!

im am a huge u2 fan and i love bono. i dont personally follow the political side, but i say fair play to making people aware of world issues, he's not trying to change the world, but simply make people aware of the problems in it. and if you dont agree with that side, you cant take away the fact that he's one of the best songwriters/singers that is around today.
