Reason(s) for second being next: Second always comes after first. You can't just have a first and third but no second!

Reason(s) for third being next: It's third because it came after two others!

I'm positive - though I've been searching for an example winners' list to show you and can't find one - that when two people tie for one spot, they take up both numbers. That is, if first place is a tie, the person next in line is in third.

If you didn't number this way, you would come out in the end with goofy places. Let's say you had 8 contestants. The first two tied, and you didn't take up 2nd place for one of them:

1: Evan
Carla
2. Jonas
3. Elijah
4. Autumn
5. Carol
6. Sara
7. Isabel

You have no 8th place. You couldn't do this, for example, in the Olympics, where you need 8 spots for the 8 teams; otherwise the mere random fact that someone tied would automatically bump up everyone else. If four people tied, or others tied, our crappy Isabel would move from 7th/8th to 4th place through no merit of her own:

1. Evan
Carla
Jonas
Elijah
2. Autumn
3. Carol
Sara
4. Isabel

See. Your places would get all screwed up. So you do take up second place for a first-place tie.

In all the contests I have ever seen, if there is a tie for first, they still have a second and third place. I agree that there has to be a second and not just first and third. It wouldn't be fair really, just because 2 people tied, if there wasn't a second then one of the people in first would have to be deemed second.

if two acctually tie for first without a tie breaker, then third runner-up would actually be second place. it's better to have a tie breaker and third to stay third. by skipping the number it still gives the impression that one of the two in first place is still occupying the 2nd place slot.

I've been browsing the web more than 4 hours today looking for answers to the same question, but I haven't found any interesting discussion like this. It is pretty worth enough for me.

Third normally comes next because there are two people in front of him/her.

Usually, the tie will negate the next number after it. For instance, you have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Two people tie for 4th, the next award is 6th.

Who knows why we do such crazy things in this world - but we do. :)

Simple.........coz already two are above you or the third one so you 've to be third as if it has to be decided that there wont be two first then logically and in honour of the already two above the third one , the third one will be third.......
