When you hear or read that quote, what do you think about first?

I think you are exactly right, Angel. But my first thought its that basic human nature often demands a need for approval. When some people are recognized for their accomplishments it helps to drive them forward to do more. Unfortunately this can backfire. Psychological twists and turns are often driven by past experiences. Someone with less creativity and problem solving skills may have a bigger ego drive due to earlier failures in life and will often take credit for the accomplishments of others.
But if one is secure in oneself and is satisfied with the outcome of their efforts they can see and know the ultimate benefit and move on to do more, no matter who takes the credit.

I agree. If someone is worried about getting the credit, then they almost always have some personal motive. They want a specific person or persons to view them a certain way or maybe they just want some positive attention. This can get in the way of the original point of the action. Say for example, a scientist has discovered the cure for cancer. He wants the credit for himself and doesn't trust anyone so instead of going to the government or someone with the money to mass distribute it immediately, he goes to a world news station and announces that he has found the cure. Then he proceeds to have it mass produced... In the time it took him to announce his discovery, as oppose to producing it right away, think of the cancer patients that could have been saved across the world that won't cuz they won't get the cure in time.... Just my point of view.... Hope it helps.

Its more of a matter of opinion than a statement of fact.So many things in the statement are subjective which allows it to be taken apart in many ways.

Also, "amazing what you can accomplish" could be a negative view too.

Different people have different views on accomplishment. If YOU do thee work for the outcome, why would someone else get the credit?

Angel, it will surprise you if I say that the eastern philosophy said this very staement some 5000 years ago. It might even sound rediculous to many in the western world.

In fact , the same statement was said in even a bigger context. "Do what you have to do. Do well. But do this with no expectation of the outcome of your doing. The result of your action is not in your hands."

What you are saying as the "result" is actually the outcome of your action.Once you have this attitute to your work then you are free from any expectation and , naturally, you perform the best.

The reference this is in an Indian thought called "Bhagwat Gita"

I think about the scandalous brown-noser, two faces that get promoted and end up stealing big from the company, while good honest hard working people are passed over for promotion daily.
Weird.
The Law of Success, agrees with that quote!

I think its a worthy thing, but I also think that people NEED to get credit for what THEY do. Without the credit given in some form, people will not share. The best accomplishments occur when groups of like minded people work together and not worry about the credit, as they know all the ideas will benefit each of them.

If credit is not given and the idea does not visibly benefit the creator of the said idea, new ideas will wither, and the creator of the ideas will not share them. If the idea itself is truely beneficial for everyone, then it wont matter who gets the credit. If the idea can be used to only benefit a certain person or group of people and possibly not benefit the creator if it is usurped- then of course the creator MUST get recognition for his creation. If the idea benefits more people than it harms then it doesnt matter.

For instance the Recording Industry versus P2P. The recording industry feels they are not getting fair credit, but actually most people are benefitting from it and so are the recording industry types in that more awareness of the song is created by more people being able to access it- thus more products associated with a good song-maker will be sold in the long run. The only minor cost to them is a minor lack of cash flow from a market that never existed for them anyways, and no real opportunity to benefit from a market that never was concerned about them anyways. (people from other cultures who could not access the music before from their country or who were not willing to openly spend money on something seen as unfitting for their chosen sub-culture, second hand users who want to save cash, students who lack funding to get all the cds they wanted to listen to anyways- those were the people the industry wants to bleed and keep ignorant) The people using it would often never have paid the requested amount in the first place and thus would never have benefited from learning what the music sounded like. This is a case where the 'creators' ie the ARTISTS get maximal exposure to a larger audience. The people who lose out are not the creators (the ARTISTS), but rather the parasitic plastic production companies who seeked to enslave creators for their own benefit and turn them into horrible drug addicted puppets like Brit and Lindsay Lohan. No loss, really. The parasites (record company executives and their lawyers) will need to find other ways to suck money out of creative ideas, and they will. its just they lack the self creative ideas to adapt due to their harming themselves with orgies, drugs and generally wasting their pathetic recording industry lives on stealing credit sucessfully for many years... and then coming to believe in their own lies for their own benefit. They were the trail to sucess before- but in many ways they were also the biggest obstacle to sucess for most creators. It all used to hinge on impressing one person. Now it only matters that many people can listen and evaluate for themselves without a parasite standing in the way of their choice.

Thats what I think about when I hear that quote and it gladdens my heart. Long live P2P and peer networks. To whoever creates and shares ideas I salute you. I hope people will hear your names ring in history one day as the creator-gods you are.

That it is very true. The best work is almost always done by collaboration. No one person has the best ideas in the world, but together, a group of people probably do have the best ideas between them.
