Our agricultural strength, military strength, and foreign investment are a result of our economic strength. Our economic strength results from our political system. It gives people freedom and opportunity. The British influences helped. Former British colonies tend to be better than former colonies of other countries. Then America improved upon the British system, which is why we surpassed other former British colonies. Our culture is the result of the combination of our political system and our economic strength. Our geographic location helps. We're far away from Eurasian countries who might attack us. Canada and Mexico are pretty good neighbors. And the fact that the western hemisphere was discovered so late by civilized people helped. It let us grab a large amount of land all at once, without many people competing against us for it. On a side note, I think that some of these answers are hilarious when they dispute that America is the most powerful country in the world.

I would say that to a certain extent America is powerful. If America ain't powerful then there prolly wont be a war in Iraq or WTC wouldnt be attacked in the first place. Coz successfully attacking a powerful nation will make the terrorists feel powerful. And thats why America was chosen. Also, the fact that the greenback is backed merely by sentiments, shows that America is indeed powerful. Furthermore, despite the increasing deficit in its budget, it is still the Big Brother of the world. So that must mean something.
But is America the most powerful country in the world? Perhaps and perhaps not. I would think that China is in fact just as powerful, if not more (in the future) than America. Imagine what would happen to the greenback if China were to dump the USD 3 trillion its currently holding. Excess supply of greenback will see its value depreciating in a blink of an eye. But of coz China will prolly not do that anytime soon.
America is one of the single largest market for China to sell its goods, and with that in mind, we tend to think that China would not dampen its relationship with America. But what would happen if one day there's a conflict between those two nations, and China decides to dump all of its US currency? China would lose its single largest market, but with the weakened USD, the Americans prolly wouldnt spend much anyway. With the weakening of USD, China's renminbi would strengthen tremendously and so will many other currencies in the world. The combined purchasing power of other nations will prolly be sufficient to substitute US as the single largest market.
Even if all else fails, China by itself is able to self-sustain just as it was during its close-door policy days. But will America be able to survive without Mexico and Canada as its business partners?

Yes, the US is the most powerful country in the world, whether you measure it politically, economically, militarily, or culturally.
The EU is a union of countries, not one country.
China or India could become more powerful, yes. It would take a while. It's unlikely that America will stay at the top forever.

The country with the most media power will always seem stronger than any other even if it's in fact the weakest. You can show the world everything you want them to see.

Of course we are. And I know people will bash the US here because they may not agree with us but, it doesn't mean we still aren't the most powerful country in the world.

Well, America isn't a country, first of all.
Do I think the USA is the most powerful country in the world? Maybe we were once, but things sure have been spiraling downward in the last 6 years.

No, we're not. I mean, we haven't even been on the winning side of a war since WW II. Our technology's 2nd or 3rd rate. Our economy's pretty crappy right now. We're falling fast.
