I just think it looks cool and I dont want my color scheme to have to match the blue

so you dont have to sand it or prep it just get a can and start sprayin'

You really don't want to use just primer. Primer is porous. It is made that way to allow it to bond to the metal surface and then allow the topcoat to bond to it. Because it is porous, it will trap moisture and cause rust.

What you need to do is paint the surface with gray paint, in a similar shade to gray primer. Then apply a satin or flat clear-coat to make the gray paint look like primer.

On Spike TV on the program Trucks, they used this technique on project "Old School" to paint a 50's Ford truck. It came out looking very cool.

Probably better to sand it down first, then spray it with primer.

spray it with gray primer...duh they make "primer" paint..regular primer does trap warer.
