Just want to clarify...it is perfectly legal for you, as the owner of your house, to perform your own electric work, correct? I mean, as long as you don't pull a meter or something like that. I"m talking just putting in a new breaker or two and running some new wire to hvac equipment.

No problem. As long as you know the basics. There cannot be a law to prevent you from doing it. However, you might want to check with your building dept. They will inspect the finished work and assure you it is okay. Good Luck.

Legal, probably depending on where you live. But smart, no.
You should always use a qualified electrician, mostly because if you make a mistake then your homeowners pays for the fire and you pay increased homeowners rates for a while. If he makes a mistake, your homeowners insurance will pay and sue the electrician. You don't pay increased rates in that event. And it takes knowledge skill and experience to work with electricity. Its dangerous to you if you don't know what you are doing. Better that someone else get the shock than if you do.
Besides, you don't pull your own teeth, do you? No, you get a dentist.

If you want to do it yourself you need to get a electrical work permit and a inspector should come out and make sure the work is done properly. This is done for your protection as if it is done wrong your house can burn down and the insurance company may not cover you if it is your own fault. The inspector should notice anything done wrong and suggest how to fix any errors. Your insurance company may also want to see a copy of the inspectors report.

It is perfectly leagal to do your own electrical work in your own home. It is just wise to have it checked to make sure it's ok. If you are sure of yourself, by all means, do it and don't worry about it.
