I was looking at this house and there are some things that need fixed, like most older homes.
I was wondering though if like in the kitchen and above some door frames and stuff if there was a crack what does that mean.
It was built in like 1950 or so, very old.
Please give me some advice on what this might be.

settling is the most probable but it can also be a more serious problem. Get a home inspector to look at it and see what they say.

Also if their is an addition on the house they might have installed the addition to the house which means it could be a serious issue with structural integrity of the home. I would say again, get an inspector out to look at it.

There has been settling of the homes foundation. You should check the exterior of the house also. Look for the same thing. Brick separating, or siding. If it has crawlspace under the house, check the stem wall for the same fracturing. Some homes don't get the water away from the foundation by gutters and down spouts. The downspouts should carry the water away from the house at least 3 to 4 feet. If it is only minor cracking, it may not be serious. If the cracks are wide and go for long lengths, call a mud jacking / foundation company to look at the damage already done.

Cracks at the corners of door and window casings are quite normal even in new homes. They are just cracks caused by the house settling. Cracks where walls and ceilings meet are usually the same thing. Be cautious about cracks in unusual places like the middle of the ceiling or wall. These are not cosmetic, they are structural and cannot be repaired with a little spackle and paint. Investing in a home inspector before purchase is a good idea if you have doubts.

A small crack above a door frame usually indicates some settling of the foundation. This is normally not serious, unless it is determined that the foundation has some serious problems such as extensive shifting or cracking. To be certain, if you are not experienced enough to trust your own inspection, hire a licensed home inspector.

Many things can cause walls to crack, Earthquakes being an inobvious one, you never said where you are from. Heavy moisture can cause drywall and paint to crack, if it is in multiple areas, then it is probably settleing. Over time houses settle, this is expecially noticable in older houses. It is just an uncontrollable occurance, patch the crack, sand, and repaint. Before you write it off as settling, make sure your foundation is still sound. If you have a poor or damaged foundation, then that needs to be fixed ASAP.

It sounds like it could be the house sat on unstable foundation...or if it is a raised house, is/was it sitting on ground that has lots of clay in the soil? That will cause the house to constantly move when the clay gets wet and then dries. Or else, someone tried to 'level' the house and that is when the cracks appeared.
