Can any of you with experience compare the pain involved in the tattooing itself and beyond that with other types of pains (burns, cuts, swells, etc.)?

during the tattooing process it seems painful at first but you kinda go numb a little after a bit. Certain areas of the body are more sensitive than others so it depends on the location. After the tattoo the pain while healing is comparable to a bad sunburn. Not really a big deal, it is a tolerable pain.

Also the tattoo outline is more painful than the coloring or filling in of the tattoo.

It's been a while since my last tattoo. When I described the pain during the tattoo I have told people that it feels like an electric toothbrush from hell. Perhaps you can liken the pain to piercing of your ear lobe. Try putting pressure on your earlobe with a pen cap, then you can experience somewhat what it feels like, depending on the area of your body. After all, it's a needle penetrating into the subcutaneous layer of your skin, the part that has the nerves and hair follicles. It's gonna hurt but after a little bit, your pain threshold should endure and a numbness might set in until the artwork is completed. Get something personal and that is timeless, so that years from now it is still relevant to you.

I have 4 tattoos. To me, getting a tattoo feels like being burned with a cigarette. It all hurts, but after a few minutes you kind of go to this zone where it still hurts/burns but you begin to tolerate the pain better and better. Before you know it, all done. There is also stinging for the rest of that day, but it too is tolerable.

Do start small for your first one. You can always add to it later or even cover it up with something different in a few years.

Also, this is the most important thing...Go to a reputable tattoo studio in your area. Do your homework, check it out. And when you go in there, take a good look around and make sure it is clean. Watch your tattoo artist too. They should clean all of the equipment right in front of you (even if it is already clean) just so you know that it is sanitary.

It depends on where you get the tattoo. I know from friends that told me the back of your neck, wrist, and ankles are the most painful. I finally got my first tattoo last year on my calf on the outer side of my leg. It is a big one and only took 45 mins. to have done. The guy that did it was so nice and we even took a break in the middle for a cigg.. It never hurt! His first words to me when I sat down was "No matter how much you think this is going to hurt it's not a quarter as bad as you are expecting!" It ended up tickling and I moved my leg a few times. I am still very happy I got it done.

My son does tattoos and i have three myself that he done for me tats can be very painful depending on where you get them like the wrist or the back of the neck are two very painful areas but most tattoo parlors now have an ointment you can ask for that numbs the area before tattooing so you don't feel a thing

It depends on where you get the tattoo. It also hurts more at first when they do the outline, but once they get going the area gets kind of numb. It almost starts to feel good, then they'll hit a spot that really hurts again, but it's not that bad. Once the tat starts to heal, it can be kind of itchy but you don't want to scratch it, just keep it covered with A&D ointment until it heals. If you want a tattoo it is really worth the pain. I had my ears pierced and I thought that hurt worse than the three tattoos I've got.

It does sound like a very cute idea but it might not last very long. You are always walking on your feet and the toes rub against your shoes and socks. I would consult with an artist to see if it is a good idea. I got a toe ring 15 years ago and it hurt. Just went over the top of the toe and not around it and now it just kinda looks like a blob of ink even though I took very good care of it. It hurt a little since it was such a small spot but not unbearable. Good luck1

It's painful when they start with the outline, after a while it gets kinda numb. I'm a woman and I've had two done on my arms; I did not think it was too unbearable. I would get another one. L
P.S. - The pain or burning depends on where you get one and it only hurts a little for a day or two. Go for it!

I have a small teddy bear tattoo on my hip. It was painful but tolerable. The pain doesn't even come remotely close to that of a burn or cut. Instead, it simply feels like a sewing needle being dragged across your skin.

it depends on where you are getting the tattoo - I got my tattoo at the base of my neck in the middle of my upper back - sometimes the pain was great - you could feel the needle go in to your skin - and it felt like a very bad bee sting - repeatedly over and over again - you have to block the pain and deal - note - I am planning on getting another a year later - so if that is any indication as to how painful it is ...
