Ok...I'm 16 weeks pregnant and was diagnosed with diabetes Type 1 (not related to the pregnancy...although I didn't find out until I was pregnant) anyways, I was talking with a girl who's had diabetes for 14 years. She's around my age (21) and I was explaining how I was pregnant and worried about the outcome of the baby due to the fact I was 10 weeks pregnant and had diabetes the whole time. Then she says, "Yeah, that's why I'll never get prenant-because I heard that if you don't keep your sugars between like 70 and 90 your baby will come out really fu(ked up". I was so hurt by this remark. Am I just being overly sensitive, or was this rude on her part?

Some people are just incensative. That is the last thing that you want to hear when you are pregnant. Dont stress yourself out about it! Talk with your doctor, if you dont have a appt. for another month or two, call and talk it over with a nurse (thats what there, there for) They wont think your crazy or incompitant for asking about the health of your baby. The last thing they want you to do is add extra stress to that baby. You need the reasurance before your next appt. so your not making this pregnancy horrible. Your a young mother and so am I. This experince will help you grow and mature for what your about to experince. The things you experince in your pregnancy make you a stronger role-model for your child. It's a time to be happy, enjoy it!

She shouldn't have said that to you, it was out of line. I'm sure you are controlling your diabetes now that you know about it, and I think really the only MAJOR problems that come with diabetes affect the baby later on in pregnancy (Like the baby being overweight) Good luck!

I had gestational diabetes with my daughters. My doctor kept a very close eye on everything. The main thing she was worried about is me having a larger baby. So we took my daughters 3-4 weeks early. Turned out they were both "normal" size. If you are worried about anything like that talk to your doctor about it. The doctor can answer those questions for you. I was insulin dependent with both my daughters too. The girl who told you what she heard was being insensitive and rude.

I think she is uninformed. Yes their are always risks... but thats with ANY PGcy.
You should do more research on type 1 and even call your OB and ask to sit down and talk about your risks.
If you didnt know this long then is it really That bad?
I am HypoGlycemic (which is oppisite of Diabetes... I have Low Blood Sugar) and we have been contolling it w/ diet and monitoring. My Dr's said nothing about staying in bettween and certain number. Besides the normal.
I would also goto www.BabyCenter.com and check out their Forums! They have helped me temendously!
Plus talking to other women with the same situation may help calm you down.

It is insensitive for her to say that, but she was probably just trying to warn you. Maybe she should have told you to do research about pregnancy and diabetes. Or, maybe you should do some research and tell her about all the healthy babies born each year to diabetic mothers.

Many people who have diabieties have perfectly healthy and happy babies. Don't let her thoughtlessness get you down. Hey maybe you'll be the person who shows her its ok to have children if you are diabetic. :) Good Luck and Congrats.
