I know that my great grandmother was from the eastern regions of china. However even thou, myself have none of these trademarks (my mother and my grandfather did), Even thou i would clarify myself british white, i do have a slight deeper tan skin/yellow pigment to it. What ethnic background box do i tick on application forms etc... ?

I dont want to offend, or be rude. But it has always confused me.

I have same problem as you I am Turkish-British and always thought I was white then been told that I wasn't, they said I had more of an olive skin, to be honest its like a comedy anyway I asked people what box to tick and some says white British some says other then state Turkish, so I use both depending on how I am feeling on that day....I think its madness....If I were you I would just put white British...or do it my way :o)

You are whatever ethnic background you consider yourself to be. For example when applying for Legal Aid, there is a (optional) question about ethnic origin and the applicant is asked to "tick the box which they would describe themselves as being". In other words, it's your right to choose, not anyone else's right to decide for you.

We employ a lady with a similar ancestry (in her case her grandmother was black and her grandfather was white). She chooses to called herself white and you wouldn't be able to guess her ancestry by looking at her.

I understand your confusion.

The English call people of Indian sub-continent origin 'Asian'. Where does that leave your ancestors?

The Japanese think that I am pink and that they are white.

The head of the MET police black police Group is Iranian...he would not have been black in Apartheid South Africa.

The only yellow people I have seen are Europeans with jaundice. God are they yellow!

Tick White other and do not explain further.

England is obsessed with race. 'Those whom the gods wish to destroy; they first make mad'

If, however you are applying for a civil service job, play the race card. there is positive discrimination. Go for it!

If you don't want to offend, crawl under a box and never come out. Someone will always be offended by you, for whatever trivial reason they want. So don't let the thought of pitting a tick in a box cause you any un-due stress.

Put, anything, it doesn't really matter, no one ever checks.

I've been Indian, African, eastern European and loads of others as well.

As long as they spell my name right, I'm not bothered/

Chillax man :-)

Answer for what you feel to be the truth. If there is a box that, in effect, says ;'mind your own business' tick that one.
Who cares about ethnicity?

You're more British than you are Chinese. Then I would tick white. If it allows, tick both.
