I made the cutest bear costume for my son when he was in Kindergarten. I bought an inexpensive brown plastic hair band and some brown, white and pink felt. I cut "ears" out of the brown felt, then added a white layer and then a pink layer for definition. I hot-glued them to the hair band, put a brown t-shirt on him, brown pants, and painted a bear face with water color. He loved how he looked and the kids all wanted to try on his ears! I wish you well - God bless!

Go to your local sewing center and get a size appropriate pattern. The staff will be happy to help you select out materials and give you pointers on how to make the costume.

If you want your child to help make it, 3 years old is a little young to be handling sharp pins and needles. If the costume requires stuffing (and a bear should), you can have your little one do that part.

As for making the 3 year old participate, do you mean to make him wear it? That one is up to you.

wats a lod boy?? anyway i babysit these kids and we made a "theater" here http://www.radiocupcake.cabanova.com/ and we did GoldyLocks and the Three bears. Just cut a long strand of paper that will fit around his head and tape it together if it's too small. Then color it brown. Then cut out little pieces of paper shaped like ears. Color the border brown and the middle pink. Then give him a brown coat, and take a washable BROWN marker and color his nose and maybe a WASHABLE BLACK one and color whiskers. If you put some water on your hand and rub it, it comes off. Then give him a brown coat and some brown shoes. And get a belt to go around his coat and tape a piece of brown material to the back for a tail. Sorry thats fast it only takes like 15-20 minutes.

I would use a brown sweatsuit, add ears to the hood on the sweatsuit. Then use gloves for the paws.
