you should never install more than 1 anti-virus on yopur p.c at any one time as this can actually damage your operating system, however this is the first time i have heard of 2 anti-viruses showning in security center, really it should of give you a warning about having more than 1 anti-virus installed
from experience i would ditch both these programs as both are slightly dodgy,go for a well known free anti-virus such as avast 4.7(http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html),this is fully compatible with windows xp service pack 2 and is even compatible with the upcoming operating system"vista"
it also uses very little system resources(ram),and installs and sets up in less than 2 minutes
make sure you have fully removed all current anti-virus software using add/remove programs in control panel and restart the computer after you have removed them
i have found avast is a excellent anti-virus,it dosent slow down your p.c like some ,and has a very good detection rate
good luck

Hi Paul,

I don't think anyone actually read what you wrote and just started spouting off random answers. What you did was correct. You uninstalled 1 AV and installed another. The problem is Cyber Defender failed to uninstall properly and that is why you are showing 2 AV products in your Security Center.

Cyber Defender is not what I would call the most reputable product. As a matter of fact, it was only recently de-listed from "Spyware Warrior's list of rogue applications. That doesn't mean it is good, only that it no longer exhibits enough qualities to be considered rogue.

Your choice to use AOL Virus Shield was a wise one. It's powered by Kaspersky and they offer some of the best protection available.

The only way to help you would be to walk you through a manual removal of Cyber Defender. I'm not at all familiar with that product, so I couldn't offer you any help removing it without seeing some logs to show what it left behind during the uninstall.

If you want my assistance, register here http://malwaremedic.suddenlaunch3.com , start a thread in the "General Computer Problems" section and title it, "Cyber Defender." I will then instruct you on how to provide me with the logs.

It is most definitely impossible for anyone to give you a 1 reply answer here that will solve your problem.

Best regards,

Simplest way is to go back in System Restore to before all this happened.

I'd go with t'other responder, try Avast or AVG, both free and both excellent anti-virus. But NOT both.

Hope this helps.

go to google and download avg
install and update and run a scan.

if that doesn't work
download ad-aware
download and update and run a scan.

let both of these programs put the bad stuff in quarintine.
