The 17th amendment to the U.S. Constitution (direct election of U.S. senators) was ratified on April 8, 1913. I would assume that the elections of 1914 were the first in which Senators were directly chosen by U.S. citizens and not governors or legislators of States and Commonwealths.

After the 17th ammendment, right? Late 19th century.

Probably the same time that Federalism died. The Senators were originally conceived as Ambassadors from their respective States.
