What can I do to start a career as an illustrator when it comes to getting my name out to publishers? I already have a growing portfolio and my artwork on the internet. I'm more looking toward children's illustration and book cover design as opposed to entirely freelance artist work.

My advice would be to get an agent. Yeah, I know they cost money, but unless you're chris van allsburg, you really need one. Try to focus on marketing towards big cities. A lot of times, companies that make English text books will need illustrators (my mother who has a bfa has done this for Road Dahl's BFG). I know it isn't glamorous work, but it may get your foot in the door.

I don't know what your experience is, but a few pointers:

You can have a style, but avoid having only one. The more diverse your portfolio is, the better. Same goes for media.

Don't draw other people's characters. Those kids who draw Spider-man, Micky Mouse and Pokemon characters will fail miserably.

Try to submit to competitions, or open galery shows.
