if you're talking about Narnia, believe it or not, it was his faith. He was deeply religous, and he wanted to do his own take on spirituality

C.S. Lewis was an incredible author an atheist turned Christian, and a professor, who was great friends with JRR Tolkein and persuaded him to publish The Hobbit.
Read the 7 Chronicles of Narnia, the scifi trilogy Out of the Silent Planet, Perleandra, The Hideous Strength, the Screwtape Letters and the Great Divorce.
Screwtape Letters is very small and worth the read, letters from Wormwood to his boss, the Great Divorce is about a trip from Hell to Heaven. Just great stuff!

CS Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were actually great friends and shared their faith in the Lord together. Both the Narnia series and the Lord of the Rings series are supposed to have a Christian backround, because they were both deepply spiritual.
