Typically Presidents are governors first, although 08 seems to be unusual in that a lot of Senators are running. Basically, you have to be born in the US, be 35, and that is all. You need a ton of money to run a decent campaign, so you have to be an effective speaker and convince people to donate cash to you, or be a very wealthy businessman like Steve Forbes or Ross Perot and fund your own campaign.

The requirements are simple.
The President must be a natural born citizen of the United States (or a citizen of the United States at the time the U.S. Constitution was adopted), at least 35 years of age, and a resident of the United States for at least fourteen years.
As far as what you should do...... I'd suggest checking your piggy bank first.
Uhhhh... You haven't been President twice already have you? If so then you must marry someone and have her run as your proxy.

Being a senator does not qualify anyone to be president. For that matter, the last president who came out of the Senate was John Kennedy and he was a disaster. The position of president should be filled by an experienced administrator, not a lawmaker.

You need to belong to an elite group. In that group there are is solid mixture of Democrats and Republicans. This way the same elite group maintains control over politics in the country. You have be very rich and you need to graduate from an elite college like Yale and you need to belong to the same secret society that the Bushes and John Kerry belong too. It's called Skull & Bones. You have to have interests in oil (like The Bushes) that way when you conquer innocent countries you can make up excuses for why you are killing the innocent citizens...while you drain the oil. Oh yeah you also have to ignore real terrorist like Osama. Even if they attack America and kill American citizens. It will be your job to go after the innocent country and ignore Osama. Osama was never in Iraq and has never had any association with Saddam Hussein. But you can feel free to make up any lies necessary to get that oil that the innocent country has. You can lie to the American public...they are blind as bats and they will believe anything you say. You can try to lie to the world, but now...keep mind they know who you really are and they know what you are doing so just kind ignore the world. Just make sure that you crush the innocent country, get their oil and make sure your family stays filthy rich!
That is what you have to do to run for president!
Ya'll go vote now...ya here!

First, you have to be a United States citizen of at least 35 years of age.
After that, the job gets difficult.
You must travel around the country (a substantial financial venture).
Then you must be able to convince a majority of the country that the things you stand for are what is best for this country in the long run.
Too many people, in politics and in general, look at what is best for the short term in our country.
For this country to maintain its values, for this country to remain great, we need politicians that look towards the distant future, that try and shape America to be a better place for our children, and their children, and we must teach the values to them that they need to be Great Americans.
So to convince me that you are a good candidate, then you need to make me believe that you will shape the future of this country for the better.

You need a lot of experience lying to people on a local level before you try it on a national level.

Might as well throw your hat in the ring. Everybody else is.
Except Kerry. He was for it, and now he is against it.
