Meter readers dont carry with them the gas meters that detect gas in the atmosphere. They merely carry a small handheld device that records your address and meter reading.
Small leaks can develop at any time, you did the right thing by calling your gas provider to have them come out and loacte then fix the leaks.
NO...dont light a match, it amazes me how some people think they are sooooo funny.

Get them out again. If your meter is in an enclosed space like under the stairs or a cupboard that is enclosed even a leak of 0.25mb every two minutes which is quite permissible you will smell. I recently fitted a boiler to a house that had a new gas installation. Transco had actually installed the gas valve and it was leaking around the connection making it smell in the cupboard the meter was in. The fault took me an hour or two to find. Ensure that the people who come bring an electronic gas sniffer. It beeps the more gas it smells they should be able to identify the leak location.

You did the right thing by calling immediately your gas company. Don't blame anybody these thing happen just be grateful that it's gonna be repaired. Depending on the winds around this area it's a good possibility that they didn't notice it. They read the meter once a month and you live there year round! Now, who's at fault???

MIne did the same thing last year
Our meters are older and the freezeing/thawing of the ground, movement and settling from the house and aging of the materials leads to leaks, your leaks could have been there for awhile mine had the wind had to blow in the right direction for anyone to notice unfortunatly. Thankfully it is fixed and now i make a trip around that side of the house more often!

They probably smelled the gas, but didn't do anything, because thet feel apathetic towards the whole thing, They were there to read the meter ONLY, and if you blow up, that is your problems. This is what the world is coming to for some people.

It may be that it was a very recent leak. It could actually be coming from the line under the ground. Definitely get ahold of the power company, and ask them to come out to check it, to verify it, and ask them what you might need to do.

They can be really subtle at first, and the meter readers are usually in a hurry. Good thing you called. They can be pretty dangerous.
