I hope it’s clear to everybody by now that Spongebob is NOT a natural sea sponge, he IS a synthetic cellulose kitchen sponge, and that he was ADOPTED. They just haven’t shown the episode where he was accidentally sucked from the kitchen sink down the disposal and through the sewers out into the ocean (like in Finding Nemo.)

It's a cartoon. Why does he wear a shirt and tie? How does he cry underwater? These questions and more can be answered simply - it's called "artistic license". If cartoons stuck rigidly to the rules of everyday reality, they would be very, very dull. Luckily they don't, and they benefit from it!
