The problem the lobbyists from the NRA have is people who don't think about how privately owned guns are used. The number one purpose for buying a gun is protection for yourself and your home and family. Most people know that emergency response by the police is only effective if you can get to the phone and dial 911, and it is not instantaneous. They will come and investigate the crime afterwords, but don't count on them to stop the crime in progress. You need to be responsible for at least delaying an aggressor until the police arrive, and you have little chance to do that against an armed aggressor unless you are armed yourself.
People who want gun control believe it will stop crime. In fact, criminals do not come by their guns legally in most cases. I remember that one of the first laws Adolf Hitler signed was strong gun control, so the public could not defend themselves against his bullies at the door. That's the sort of thing we protect ourselves from with the Second Amendment.
