it's exactly as the name states. it's a charm to protect from nightmares. I have one on the wall above my bed & I've had MAYBE two mild nightmares since I've hung it up there....and I used to have nightmares almost all the time beforehand! I tried looking around at sites for you & this looks to be the most informative one I've found:

Legend states that dreams are messages from sacred spirits. The Dreamcatcher represents the web of life and its job is to sift the dreams of those sleeping nearby. Bad dreams are caught on the web and disappear in the morning sun. Good dreams pass through the center hole and are fulfilled in the sleepers destiny.
Mandalas are variations of dance shields used by the plains Indians. They are adorned with designs and fetishes that have special meaning to the owner and are meant to bring them happiness and prosperity.

The web part represents the web of life. It is hung above the bed to sift dreams and visions.
The good things in dreams are captured in the web of life and carried with the dreamer...but the evil in dreams escapes through the hole in the center of the web.

U remind me of a children book for Roald Dahl called " the BFG"..or the big friendly giant...it's a about a giant who goes and catches dreams from forests..and then goes to children 's rooms when they are sleeping to give them their dreams.
