Will my '98 Explorer need codes for the radio or anything upon reconnection? Also, when I reconnect, do I need to put on positive or negative first?

Woah! Lots of misleading answers.

When disconnecting, ALWAYS disconnect the Black Negative terminal FIRST. If the wrench hits ground, it's no problem, no spikes to your computer. IF YOU DISCONNECT THE RED POSITIVE CABLE FIRST YOU COULD HIT GROUND AND SPIKE THE SYSTEM. BAD IDEA.

When reconnecting, ALWAYS reconnect the Black Negative terminal LAST! Again, it's that possible arc thing.

As for the radio and codes, you'll have to check with Ford. It's likely you will need one.

the accepted practice is to disconnect the negative cable first,
though it really does not make any difference, the reasoning is that if you work with the positive cable first you might swing the wrench into something metal which would be grounded (negative) and have a massive short, car battery's have the ability to discharge enormous amount of potential upon direct shorting, I do not know whether a '98 Exploder takes a radio code

If you're talking disconnect as in removing battery:
Disconnect negative (ground) first.
If you try to disconnect positive first, and you wrench hits a grounded part of the engine or body while in contact with terminal, it'll spark like hell.
When reconnecting, install negative last.

In all reality, as long as you disconnect one of them, your OK, and No it doesnt matter if you do negative or positive first, just make sure the car is not running when you disconnect battery,

I don't know where the positive first people came from. In any repair manual, anywhere, NEGATIVE FIRST. You can touch both terminals with wet hands and feel nothing. If you short positive to ground through a wrench, you will see sparks fly and you could get burnt.

Disconnect the positive first and reconnect it first. When jumping another car using jumper cables you go--starting with the running car--positive to positive--then---negative to ground.
You shouldn't need any codes for your radio, just reset your station selections.

Doesn't matter what year make or model. On any battery operated machine always disconnect the negative first. On a boost alway connect the negative last.

No question, to remove:
Negative(-) cable off FIRST, then Positive(+) next.

To reinstall:
Positive(+) on FIRST, then Negative(-) on.

I would think the radio doesn't need anything except to reset favorite stations.
