A little girl was on a camping trip in a nature reserve when she was awakened late one night by a strange noise.
Any ideas on what kind of story to write? I could only think of a snake in the forest.

It had good starting on the essay. The rest depends on what the writer think. My suggestion is that you could either put ir as
a) horror: like seeing some illegal immgrants trying to commit the crime
b) Warm heartening : Maybe somebody is injured and needs help.
There are a lot more but needs time to explore on it.

That depends what genre you want it to fall under.
+Romance/Love: it could be a boy, or an older person that will, in the future of the story, become very close, but not true love 'cause this is a little girl after all.
+Horror: Some evil man who wants to murder her. Again, she is a little girl, and while it would be scary, I wouldn't recommend it.
+ Comedy: I dunno, you could do any one of the above and just make it funny.
+ Drama: Maybe some person's who's dying, and she has to help him.
+ Science-Fiction: An alien, or some portal to a faraway world.
+ Action: Maybe it's a fugitive in a bush, and he makes allies with the little girl.
I have no idea ... the above ideas are cliche, and they suck, but maybe you could get an idea.

is the girl alone, if not...
write she found a kid lost at the nature reserve. is tha possible?
if not..
she found an injured animal..
maybe she found a gang of robber's hide out.

What about a Bigfoot...maybe elves...can it be make believe creatures??? maybe poachers and she rescues some animals...good luck!
