I have worked in the field and have adopted a child from a past with physical and sexual abuse.
The reactions of children vary as do personalities. Some children cannot trust others, while others are promiscuous and tend to put themselves in dangerous situations.
Post tramatic stress disorder is common as is depression and inability to concentrate. Suicidal attempts, violent outbursts, bizarre behaviors (eating non-food items, imaginary friends, telling stories that are not possible to be true, etc..), poor hygiene, are all common among children that have not sought professional counseling to help them understand and deal with the experience.

All the answers were great but lets not forget the multiple personalities. I know a girl who had 13 personalities. I am very close friends with her mother. As a child she was molested by her father. She only slept in the bathtub because there were no windows in that room. He couldn't get to her in there. So there are a lot of different things. As she got older she turned to drugs, alcohol and breaking the law. Because the father was never prosecuted (mishandling of evidence) she had a real hard time getting any type of counseling. Today, however she is doing very well. No alcohol or drugs and she is married with 2 beautiful children. She had to go through a lot of treatment before she would admit to herself why she was on a self destruction mode. (she had already admitted it to everyone else) When she did, the recovery was amazing.

I've read that there are many problems, and virtually the child's life is ruined, unless they somehow posess the strength to get over it and not see themselves as a victim for the rest of their lives.

Some problems include post traumatic stress syndrome, anger, passive-aggressive behavior, inability to sleep, the possibility of becoming a child molester themselves. The inability to finish things.

Other problems include homosexuality, inappropriate behavior toward other children, aggressiveness at times, prostitution, drugs and criminal behaviors.

You will have to look up the psychological terms above, as it would take too long to get into each one of them here.

Low self respect, lack of trust, destructive behaviors (cutting, drugs, alch) extoverted or introverted beyond a healthy norm. Nightmares, depression, anxiety. The list can go on and on. There a hundreds of variables. Most importantly for the Child is that he/she was believed and accepted when he/she told.
