You need a picture if you want to solve that one!

It sounds like a platter that would be used at dinner or on Sundays for bread at dinner, or it could have even been a wedding gift (hope you never go hungry thing).

It is hard to tell if it is pewter without damaging it for an amatuer. Your best bet is to take it to an antique dealer where they can tell what it is by the oxidization and such.
