Hi, we need to clean our carpet before moving out of our rented flat. It is just one area in the living room by the door. This part of the carpet is where you first tred after coming in from outside, so mud and building site dust (my BF is a bricklayer) has been trodden in, as well as some other stains like apple juice. Alos, when using a cheap carpet cleaner foam, my boyfriend didn't sponge up the excess foam, so it seems to have left a whitish/yellow reside. The carpet is a dusty pink in colour (and quite old by the looks of it). We were thinking about buying a cheap steam cleaner for about £40 to do the job. Do you think this would work to get al the stains out? Also, can you add cleaning agents to steam cleaners or should you add them to the carpet? If so, what would you recommend?
Here's the cleaner we're going to buy http://www.woolworths.co.uk/ww_p2/product/index.jhtml?pid=50348724 - good as it also can steam wallpaper off of walls which we'll need for our new flat!!

Also, from reading other questions - people seems to recommend oxyclean. Can I buy this in the UK - if so, where?

If you have previous cleaned the carpet with foam cleaner do not add cleaner to the steamer. You will have a lot of foam in the machine water you vacuum back up. You will probably have to clean a few times to get rid of all the foam from previous cleaning. Also, most steam cleaners have special agents to clean problem spots/areas. You might try some of those if you still have a soiled spot after cleaning it a couple of times. Let it dry between cleanings or you will get it so wet it will never dry (and might mildew the pad underneath.) Also, you might check to see if you can rent one instead of buying one.

Well if you cleaned them best as you could.. everywhere I have been the landlord has to give you fair wear and tear on flooring. An old carpet is an old carpet and will never look new.

Use the steamcleaner and only use the soap, and at the level, as recommended by the owners manual for the machine.

Good luck
