Is it acceptable to negotiate with terrorism? Doesn't that embolden them? But then again, so does fighting them, right? So what the f*** do we do?

Do worry about terrorism? I'm sure that's what some of our fellow Americans were thinking when they jumped out the 86th story of the burning WTC.

Go about your life and live it to the fullest. It's too short to worry about a terrorist. If you do worry about it then it is just as bad as fighting or giving in to them.

Violence just creates more violence

Terrorism is an extreme activity for those who oppose another group. So fighting terrorism means more than just fighting them.
You have to reduce and eliminate the credibility of their dogma.
Show a better face, do good deeds, promote a reputation that critics will not be able to strongly criticize. Then the fuel for terrorism will begin to run out.

You don't negotiate with terrorists. You negotiate with those entities, i.e. counties that support them, and try to get them to withdraw that support. I'm not saying it's easy, but in the end it's a hell of a lot easier and more worth wild, if you are successful, than going into war. We should also be doing more to win the "hearts and minds" of the local populous, showing them what the best of America is all about. If Muslim kids are taught that America is a threat and dangerous to them, military action will only reinforce that view. We need to give them a reason to view us in a more positive way. Like I said, it's not easy.
The cons on this board will hate me quoting Clinton but I think it's appropriate. In his first inaugural address he said "there is nothing wrong with American that can't be fixed with what's right with America". Maybe we need to show more of whats right with America in the countries with large fundamentalist populations.

Killing them isn't creating more...what's creating more is the the idea that they are winning.....and those ideas are publicly announced by the democrats and others.
Before the late 70's negotiationg with terrorists caused more harm than good...there were hijackings almost every week.
They started killing hostages when they realized we were not going to negotiate with them anymore.....hijackings almost became a thing of the past.

Bottom line telling someone they are winning creates a will to continue fighting.
But hey they support the troops but are betting on the other guy to win.

So, did giving the IRA a voice in government in Ireland make the commit MORE acts, or did they have some power to try and address their grievances?

People turn to terrorist methods because they lack the power or standing to do otherwise. In the Middle East, you have obscenely wealthy autocrats and masses of neglected people with no voice or say.

And we support those autocrats. What's the dirt poor slob to do? They get angry, are susceptible to demogougary, are manipulated easily.

If they have a voice, if there is some hope, justice or equity in their lives, then terrorist propaganda has no appeal.

Hitler would never have been able to do if the German people weren't feeling victimized (by the conditions of the WWI peace treaty) and looking for someone to blame for their problems.

When someone is impotent, being able to "do" something, even something destructive has a certain appeal.

We need to quit looking at terrorists as merely "evil-doers" and look instead at the factors that give rise to a situation where doing evil is considered a viable or attractive option.

They don't hate us for our freedoms, they hate us for our policies, or, at least, what they believe our policies to be. It might help if our policies were less "do as I say, and not as I do."

Killing a terrorist does nothing because they have no regard for life anyway. Knock off their leaders. If you want to kill the beast, sever the head.

Negotiating with terrorists does embolden them. As part of the Oslo Accords, Israel was talked into releasing hundreds of "Palestinian" terrorists. One of them was Mohammad Atta, the ringleader of the 9/11 hijackers. When the UN gave the PLO a non-voting seat in the general assembly, that didn't placate Arafraud. It convinced him that killing more Israelis would give him more leverage.

U cannt negotiate with them because it makes your own people angry. U should hit the grassroot of terrorism which is poverty, unemployement etc. Terrorist groups use these tools to get new recruites. Nobody wants to endanger his life if his basic needs are satisfied. In every person lives a good person so if we keep them good there wont be any new terrorists and the problem will solve automatically.

you fight terror with doritos. I know it sounds retarded, but all we need to do is lock up all the terrorists we find and feed them doritos, twinkies, pizza hut, and make them watch tv all day everyday while they're confined to a lazy boy and I am sure that after 2 years of that sort of thing the last thing they'd want to do is get off their fat, lazy duffs to strap a bomb on and go die for someone else. Just lazy and selfish...Doritos..I'm telling you...

"If killing terrorists creates more terrorists, how do you fight terrorism?"

Good question. I think it is imperative to negotiate with terrorists initially in order to end the perpetual cycle of violence. If they don't reason with you, then by all means use force.
