Whilst it is illegal to drive on the road without an operating speedo, speedometer function is NOT part of the United Kingdom M.O.T. test.

Actually no. The MOT is a check of the vehicle safety systems and general roadworthiness, brakes lights horn wheel bearings suspension etc. On most bikes the speedo cable runs off the front wheel which only turns very slowly on the roller brake tester, not enough to register on the speedo anyway. And if your mileage has increased from the date the last certificate was entered, the tester wont know if the speedo works or not.

Nope. Speedo's are only a requirement in Class 5 Mot's (buses).

they dont usually ride the bike on a mot so no it shouldnt be a prob

yes and no, took my bike for M.O.T and they didnt bother with my speedo but best to get it sorted, plus if you dont know what speed your doing the coppers catch ya your in for it.

yep, definitely... get it sorted (or replaced) before you take it for mot, you'll save a bunch.

replacing a speedo is quite simple, you can find loads of online help, just type "how do i replace speedo on [make/model]" into google to find a guide on how to do it, or obtain a copy of the haines manual for your bike...

yes but if its an expensive repair i believe you can buy one of those bicycle ones that clip on just to get thru mot tho probably inadequate if you ride something like an R1 or a fireblade !
