what headlight bulb is best for my bmw?

hi i have a bmw 3 series e36. im not sure if i need a h1 bulb or a h7 bulb for the headlight. the heynes manual says h7 and my bmw manual says h1 whats the difference and which one is better to use?

On your car, for the normal 'dipped' headlights, you need an H7 bulb. Simple as.

They have different connections. Check your bulb against the images on http://www.1stautobulbs.com/ImageThumbs.php for the right model.
