There are 36 different ways to roll 2 dice. The odds of rolling a 2 is 1/36 and the same for rolling a 12. Add them together and you get 2/36.

2/36 = 1/18 ~ 5.5%

With a pair of dice there are 36 possible combinations. consider each die alone. With any number on one die, there are six possibilities for the other die. hence a total of 36 possible combinations; To roll a 2, there is one possibility, a 1 and a 1, for 12 there is only one possibility a 6 and a 6, Hence both have a possibility of 1 in 36.

consider a 7, combination are (remember die A is different from die B) for (A,B): 1:6, 6:1, 2:5, 5:2, 3:4, 4:3 for a total of six combinations, therefore the odds of rolling a 7 are 6 in 36 or(=) 1 in 6.

there is only one way of getting 2 from 2 dice = 1+1 and only one way of getting 12 = 6+6 out of a possible 36 outcomes

getting a 2 = 1/36
getting a 12 = 1/36

= 1/36 + 1/36 = 2/36 cancelled down to give 1/18

Think about it ...

To get a 2, you need to roll a 1 and a 1. The chance of rolling a 1 one one die is 1/6 and the probablility of getting a 1 on the other is 1/6. I think the probablility of getting the 2 is (1/6) times (1/6) or 1/36. I think you can go from there.
