The first people to orbit the moon were on Apollo 8, so technically in my mind, they were the first to reach the moon.
Frank Borman, James Lovell, William Anders
Apollo 8 was the first mission to take humans to the Moon and back. An important prelude to actually landing on the Moon was testing the flight trajectory and operations for getting there and back. Apollo 8 did this and acheived many other firsts including the first manned mission launched on the Saturn V, first manned launch from NASA's new Moonport, first pictures taken by humans of the Earth from deep space, and first live TV coverage of the lunar surface.

Tangrowth said, "Nobody has literally touched the moon." I touched a piece of it that was on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Literally. ____________________________ Tazzz said, "If something was done in past so successfully why it has not been repeated in such advance scientific times?" It cost an incredible sum of money to reach the moon, and it was done for one reason, and one reason only: Bragging rights. There is nothing there of any value to anybody. Both the USA and the Soviet Union spent fortunes on their manned moon programs. The Soviets cancelled theirs when the Apollo 11 crew returned safely to Earth. There was no point in spending another kopek just to come in 2nd place.
