Well you didn't specify what meds, or why, or what kind of fish, or tank size.
Some fish are natural jumpers, but all fish will jump out of water that is not suitable for them. Elements like chlorine, ammonia, nitrites, etc, are very toxic and painful in any amount, or even meds that are too strong or water too hot or cold, and fish will jump out of the water trying find cleaner water.
If you find them in time, you can usually place them back in the tank water and they'll be fine. Even if they apear dead, they will sometimes recover when you put them back in water.
Other times, they are out of the water too long or fall from too high and they die.

It happens, and often. you must get a hood for your tank, and believe it or not even THEN sometimes they still slip through. I have a full hood on my tank and there's only aboiut 2 inches of open area by the filter, I had a ropefish and somehow managed to find that two inch little crack and jumped out. Sadly I found him the next morning on the floor, it was too late :(
Why did your fiance think you were trying to kill your fish? why would anyone do that on purpose?!

what was your fish and what were you keeping it in?
some fish are just jumpers! bettas especially, as well as hatchet fish and african butterfly fish.

this is why it's always a VERY good idea to keep lids on your tanks! eels are especially good escape artists and will wiggle their way out of the tiniest holes and across your floor.

why were you putting meds in the water? how often do you change it? did you dechlor it?

some fish are just jumpy. thats why we have full hoods for tank, well that and to keep dust out of the tank. bettas are the most jumpy that ive seen though many keep them in a bowl when i had one in a tank he was always trying to get out. the med didnt make him want out so dont think its your fault.

before everything, i ought to go with to signify grammar college to you. Your fish jumped out of the tank because he ought to bounce out. the reason people make hoods to bypass intense of tanks, is to save the fish contained in the tank.
