MgO + H2O = Mg(OH)2

As you can see the equation is balanced. The result is a weak base, Magnesium hydroxide AKA the milk of magnesia. It is used to cure heartburn and other digestion related problems.

MgO(s) + H2O(l) ---> Mg(OH)2(aq)

Magnesium Hydroxide is only slightly soluble in water. We do this commonly with CaO (lime) which does not dissolve well with water. We put it in our garden, etc to reduce the acidity of the soil because the CaO will slowly leach into the ground water and when it does, it makes Ca(OH)2 which is a strong base like Mg(OH)2.
