Because the earth tilts on an axis, the northern hemishpheres is titlting away from the sun in the winter, causing it to be cold, and at the same time, the southern hemisphere in pointed towards the earth, causing it to receive more direct sunlight, and hence it is summer there. The equator, which pretty much stays the same distance from the sun, has the same temperatures most of the year round.

Because the earth is tilted on it's axes and we are pointed away from the sun right now. On June 21 we'll be directly on the other side pointing toward the sun.
