I like to think of love as something you create yourself, rather than some universally identifiable feeling. So your experience of love could be entirely different from everyone elses, even though they might seem the same. In this way you can always tell if you're in love because you think to yourself "I wonder if I'm in love."
I agree that there are many types of love (the Greek words being the best starting point I've ever seen). There's a psycholgical theory that in order to experience romantic love you must have three things: 1) an appropriate romantic focus, 2) heightened physical response 3) being raised in a society that included (promotes) the idea of romantic love.
An intense emotional attachment.

One word...COMMITTMENT. Like the old fable about the pig and the chicken. One day they were engaged in a heated argument about which loved the farmer more. To the end the chicken gave an egg every day of her life. However, the pig gave him bacon to go with her eggs. Which loved greater? Love is ultimately unfailing devotion and unconditional committment to another.

Your question is in the past tense.
There are many kinds of love, which one are you asking about?
There is a movie coming February 14th with limited distribution, only several major cities and then again in late March. The name of the movie is, "what Love Is" starring Cuba Gooding Jr. That movie explains somethings about, what love is, in modern day life.Let me reiterate, there are many kinds of love.

Personally I believe that the Greeks have it in that they define different types of love including phileo (more of a brotherly/friendship love) and agape (love for others, putting them before yourself)
Phileo describes feelings toward others... while agape describes our actions toward others.
There's also storge, which is family love... as parent to child and child to parent and eros, which is physical love between a man and woman. Obviously these also both address feelings.
Ideally, there would be people for whom we have phileo... and those for whom we have storge... and only one at a time for whom we have eros... but for every person who lives, has ever lived and who will ever be born, we should have agape. To constantly think of others and gear your actions that way... to me that is having best control over oneself.
Consider how it would impact your life if you never injured another person with word or action... but that everything you did would improve the universe in some small way. To learn to stop and think before we act and then consciously choose the best path for all... now that's a bit of heaven here on earth.
Trying to improve the planet and change the world... one person and one moment at a time...
Best to you...

When you make love, do you look in the mirror?
Who do you think of, does he look like me?
Do you tell lies and say that it's forever?
Do you think twice, or just touch 'n' see?
Ooh babe ooh yeah
When you're alone, do you let go?
Are you wild 'n' willin' or is it just for show?
Ooh c'mon
I don't wanna touch you too much baby
'Cos making love to you might drive me crazy
I know you think that love is the way you make it
So I don't wanna be there when you decide to break it
No!
Love bites, love bleeds
It's bringin' me to my knees
Love lives, love dies
It's no surprise
Love begs, love pleads
It's what I need
When I'm with you are you somewhere else?
Am I gettin' thru or do you please yourself?
When you wake up will you walk out?
It can't be love if you throw it about
Ooh babe
I don't wanna touch you too much baby
'Cos making love to you might drive me crazy
Ooh yeah
Love bites, love bleeds
It's bringin' me to my knees
Love lives, love dies
If you've got love in your sights
Watch out, love bites
Yes it does
It will be hell

Comfy, cozy, safe, secure, exciting, thrilling, chocolate, sweet, yummy, warm, fuzzy, soft, happy, nurturing, caring, good, spontaneous, butterflies, harmony, flowers, fun, roller coaster ride, two-sided, work, effortless...etc.
It's so much.
Each person experiences differently yet the same.
That's my perception.
