When I turn on my garbage disposal it just makes a humming noise then 3 seconds later it sets off the reset button, I checked to see if anything was stuck in the disposal it was ok, the grinder spins freely, what can it be?. I just want to make sure that it may be something simple before I call a tech.

Use an Allen wrench on the bottom to make sure it's free.

The allen wrench on the bottom would free the unit up if it were frozen for some reason. If it still doesn't run. get a new one. They are cheaper to replace than to get fixed or to have a repairman come out.

If you can't spin the rotor easily with the Allen wrench and/or it still shuts off, my advice is to replace the unit. They do wear out and are not worth fixing. Replacement units are quite inexpensive at places like Ace Hardware, and easily installed with basic hand tools.

It sounds to me like the starter is bad on the motor.

Make sure it turns freely in both directions. If it does I am afraid you have a serious problem.

With today's costs you would probably be ahead to buy a new one. They really aren't worth repairing.
