The Nile.

Alas, all that said the Nile are officially correct.

Were it not for a quirk of fate on which fork of the mighty river that travelers first explored, the Mississippi, might have been the longest. But the explorers went right instead of left and the shorter branch bore the name. The longer branch became the Missouri River and together with the Mississippi below their confluence, are longer than the Nile River.

That said, other river systems may be able to boast longer status in a similar manner.

The Nile.
The Nile has two major tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile, the latter being the source of most of the Nile's water and fertile soil, but the former being the longer of the two. The Red Nile rises in the Great Lakes region of central Africa, with the most distant source in southern Rwanda 2°16′55.92″S, 29°19′52.32″E, and flows north from there through Tanzania, Lake Victoria, Uganda and southern Sudan, while the Blue Nile starts at Lake Tana in Ethiopia, flowing into Sudan from the southeast. The two rivers meet near the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
