When a bowl hits the jack, why does the referee spray it, and what do they spray it with?

Cos it's a live bowl if the bowl goes in the ditch.

They spray it with chalk to show that the bowl is a 'toucher' - it has touched the jack. It needs to be marked because if later on in the end that particular bowl is knocked into the ditch then the bowl will still be considered 'live' meaning that it can stay there and not be removed and it can be counted if nearest to the jack. Any bowl that is not a toucher and not marked with chalk that then gets knocked into the ditch will be removed from play.

They spray it with a chalk like substance, its done so that if the bowl that has been sprayed gets hit into the gutter it still counts as live.

If a bowl normally enters the gutter then its deemed "out of the game".

if the bowl touches the jack it sprayed with chalk it is then deemed a toucher if the is then put in the ditch its deemed a live bowl any bowl that goes into the ditch without touching the jack is dead hope this helps
