I firmly believe that it's the little things that count the most. So to show your appreciation for someone, I don't think you need to go to a huge amount of trouble. Something really simple like cooking a beautiful meal or even cleaning the house for someone can really make their day. Especially if it's a chore that they have to do all the time. Not having to do it just once will be a blessing, and they'll know that you care.

~first you need to know/find out what is important to THEM. (I may like flowers, but someone else might need for you to look them directly in the eyes as you tell them, sincerely, "thank you!".)
It REALLY depends on the person, but, here are some suggestion:
1) a sincere thank you.
2) a hug and thank you.
3) flowers.
4) take them out to dinner.
5) a movie.
6) a card.
7) do them a favor.
8) clean their room/car/house...
9) cash.
10) a bottle of wine...
11) give them a gift of their fav. lotion/perfume...
12) offer to babysit for them on Friday night...
13) cook dinner...
14) pick up their dry cleaning...
15) call them and say "thank you so much...".
16) bring them a cup of coffee/hot cocoa, and maybe a bagel/sausage biscuit/donut to work the next morning...
17) balloons
18) e-mail
19) e-card
20) buy a favorite book
21) a gift certificate
22) spend extra time with them.
23) be interested in them.
24) listen to them.
25) make them a priority!
26) pay "attention" to them when they talk.
27) give them a sincere complement.
28) accept an invitation from them.
29) extend an invitation to them.
30) join a class together - (make it something they enjoy.)
......... use your imagination! :)
PS to Buster:
since when did "cooking a beautiful meal" & / or "cleaning the house" become "something really simple" or just a "little" thing?!
