I'll be building a computer soon and I have been wondering whether or not to get a high-end Pentium 4 (around 3.6GHz), or a kinda low-end Core 2 Duo at 1.9GHz. What's better when it comes to performance? Would the performance difference be noticeable between the two processors? What would be a better buy? What do you guys suggest?

Alright. New information by fellow yahoo answerers have been notified. Let's add to the question.

Intel Pentium 4 3.6GHz?
...
AMD Athlon 64 3500+?
... or
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.9GHz?

Also, what is the GHz equivalent of a 3500+ of the Athlon 64?

Definitely Core2Duo.

Not only does it outperform the P4, but if you get the high end P4 your upgrade options on that motherboard will be pretty much exhausted.

A Core2Duo capable mainboard will allow you to upgrade to a much faster Core2 unit in the future should you choose to do so....the P4 3.6 is the end of the line...

It is not wise to invest in older technology if you have a choice.

I would go for the Core 2 Duo.
I upgraded a P4 3.6 to a Core 2 Duo 2.4 and I'm seriously impressed with the performance boost.

Core 2 Duo should give you better performance with lower heat and power. Definitely the best to go with at this time.

Core 2 Duo is better. You can also get a Pentium D that is a dual core processor and it's cheap.

definately core 2. It's faster than P4. But if you really want a low end P4, get at least the P4 HT.

Core 2 Duo is double layer processor .so it works 1.9*2GHz.( 3.8GHz)so Core 2 Duo is the best.

pls go for an amd processor.. go for an Athlon FX-64... its much much more better than core 2 duo or p4.. plus its much cheaper than intel processors. look for discussions about amd and intel processors over the net. find other user's comments about these processors..(",)
