i want to melt down a 10 k ring, how much borax should i use?

That depends on more than just the size of the ring, the size of your crucible is more of an issue. Generally you consider the flux to be a non-limiting reagent. So adding excess should not be a problem. You just want to skim off the excess flux before you pour the gold into your mold.

And of course gold is very forgiving, compared to silver. You shouldn’t need too much flux for the melt.
