I have orange broadband but when I try to download from the net the transfer rate is only about 27kbps, is there any programmes which will speed this up

You have asked a complex question. Firstly you should run a test and here is a site that will do just that : http://www.internetfrog.com/mypc/speedtest/ I have just run the test on my own connection and the upload (from ISP to you - download is you to ISP) speed is 175kbps. Thus you can see your connection at 27 is running very slow on upload. I suggest you run the test several times for a couple of days (during different times in the day), keeping a record of each test, and if the speed remains consistently slow you should raise it with Orange who can run their own tests covering both the BT LLP.

You will find that Orange will try and avoid running the test (it's work for them) and point the finger at your PC or BT. You will have to be persistent.

Finally, forget getting a bit of software to make the connection run faster - you would be wasting your money.

Good luck

The ideal thing would be to upgrade your bandwidth. But outside of that there are a few things you can do to "tweak" your download speed. 1) You can use a download accelerator 2) quit other programs when downloading. 3) limit the number of downloads at once - the more simultaneous downloads, the slower the download speed 4) get yourself a good spyware tool and antivirus - your system could be infected with either one which is causing our system to be slow in general. Ad-Aware is a good spyware removal tool and it's free and can be downloaded from www.lavasoft.com.

The ideal thing, depending on your need to download, would be to increase your bandwidth (bear in mind that all of the above will still affect your download speed no matter your bandwidth - only that lower bandwidths would be more widely affected)

hope this helps!

download rate is dependant on the server.
if you are downloading illegally from p2p then ther is no server and you are reliant on how fast the other persons connection is and how fast your own is.
also, heavy traffic from 4-9 pm in the UK really slows down broadband

Cant rely on programs to do so.

Download speeds rely on how much you can download, and how fast, and how fast the server, or host, can send. If your download speed is only so fast, then thats the limit.
