I'm not sure all students feel they have to get drunk. Most just don't know when to stop. For a student drinking is one of the lowest cost forms of entertainment. It requires no up front capital outlay in that it requires no devices or equipment or special clothing, or travel. As long as you have enough for a couple of pints you can go out. Most poor people down the ages escape into alcohol for the same reasons.

There just following the crowd.
For years it has been the stereotype that all students drink and party as much as they can.
People just feel that that's the way there supposed to behave at uni, and if they dont, there not part of the IN crowd.
The day they finish there exams and enter the real world that all stops the very next day.
Been there, done that and worn the vomit covered t-shirt.

I don't believe that generally students believe they HAVE to get drunk...I suspect it is more because the feeling of becoming inebriated heightens the sensation of enjoyment and that there is also a cultural expectation that students on a night out and having fun will be drinking alcohol. It is a self fulfilling prophecy.

One reason is fear, when we dive into unknown territories, such as college, and we want so much to fit into the scheme of things that we're quick to let others influence how we think or feel. It's lonely being the only sober person in the group, but, if you're Strong enough to handle classes, etc. what's wrong with being the odd man-out. Sometimes we need to step back and look at how alcohol really looks on a person.

well for one it's engraved in us thru society and so it's the "stereotypical" college kid thing to do. I mean c'mon they put it in movies that when your in college it's just the must do thing to do party, drink, sex, and we all feel just like the 1st guy answered kids are finally old enough to purchase it and feel like it's a "stereotypical must do thing to do" due to society in america and really kids more than likely do feel that it's all they have to do with they're kind of budget. It's something that has been engraved in out minds since we were old enough to know what drinking and drunk was. Yeah they talk about not doing drugs and drinking in school (elementry-high school) but it starts with our parents. I mean we see them drinking we see it in the movies and on tv. They even have stupid billboards for like bud light/budweiser saying "IT'S DEFINATELY WORTH IT" but NO it's not worth your career, life, or someone elses life!!! I mean if you are in school they usually have so much extracurricular activites you can get involved in. Here is a website you can go to and look at the college drinking statistics it's pretty awesome check it out!!!www.shsu.edu/~org_aai/information/stats.html
I also feel that college students blame stress and school and college money on the cause of their drinking to relax them. But just like society, media, tv, movies, AMERICA, has instilled in us that you have to look like Paris Hilton and other skinny beautiful women in order to be accepted they also do that with alchol so college students feel like they have to be a drinker in order to be accepted. I also feel like they think that in order to be happy you have to drink or get drunk because it wipes the problems away TEMPORARELY, but it's only a quick fix moment and doesn't last and also, the next day results are not usually positive. Trust me on these things, I am a christian now but it took me forever to realize this because I guess the irish in my blood didn't help either, lol. I use to feel like if i couldn't drink or get drunk I would never be happy and it almost cost me my life, son, and marriage. So research what there is out there that college students could do that doesn't involve drinking. I really enjoy the peace that I have now knowing that my record is clear and I am guarenteed to know the results of tomorrow. I hope I helped, let me know and good luck and God Bless. By the way, I am 25 yrs old and glad I stopped young.

Group think mentality, it also hides insecurities and doubt.
And the fact that everything in Ireland is surrounded by drink, baptism, communions, confirmations, weddings, divorce parties, so we are brought up to believe celebrations and good times go hand in hand with getting locked. We don't know how to enjoy any form of celebration without it, or so it seems. So, in effect, they are just doing what their parents always have

Probably because their parents never sit them down and told them of the dangers of alcohol abuse or they saw their parents do the same as they are doing. It's a part of growing up I suppose. One of the things you don't realize the dangers until it's too late...
