Female papaya trees have white thumb sized flowers at the base of the leaves stalk, while male trees have smaller lime green colored flowers hanging on long stalks of their own, they branches out from the base of the leaves stalk as female flowers do.
Check your tree.

My mother planted two in her yard, the way to tell is the male plant has flowers on it....and I believe the leaves are smaller.
