Please don't listen to anyone else! But my old computer was exactly the same, i went to http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm and did a full safety scan, checks and fixes your computer for everything. Mine was like new after it! Then when you are finnished, download Lavasofts, adaware se free edition from http://www.lavasoft.com/ which is really good at getting rid of spyware on your computer, which causes popups! and slows your computer down!

It could be any number of viruses or adware.
First disable system restore untill the problem is fixed..
then do an online scan at http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/
This should find most problems and allow you to remove them, this service is free.
To search for and remove trojan viruses download the free software from http://www.swatit.org/
Another very good program is AVG anti virus as somebody else has mentioned. You can find a free version at
http://www.free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
Install, update and run the program. It may take a while to scan if you have a large hard drive but it should find any remaining problems.
You may want to install a firewall such as zone alarm from http://www.zonelabs.com
Update all the products you choose often.
All the products I have mentioned were recommended to me by my service provider in a letter after my pc got infected and started sending spam email to people.

As alreay indicated AVG is a free virus checker however I understand it not going to be free for much longer.
Regarding the pop up, several of the search engine have pop up prevention as a part of there front end.
Also what is very good is a free (for personal use ) is Lava Soft see link below
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
Once installed go to update
This removes loads of rubbish safely
Finally try also CCleaner, this removes loads of old unused odd ends and there is also some thing called "Issues" this gets rid of items which may be casing you a problem again this is a freeby.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Update once installed
Best of luck
Regards
John

Its FREE and it works
http://www.superantispyware.com/
i tried many of the others listed before i found this one, and i cant believe it worked,
AVG said i had no viruses
spy-bot removed a fair bit of spy/ad-ware
and this site http://www.superantispyware.com/ removed 156 Trojans 7 different ones but 56 of same ones, i had a lot of the backdoor ones probably because i download quite a lot.

Just install a yahoo toolbar available for free and enable it's pop up blocking function.
For removing antiviruses, you can install AVG antivirus for free from www.grisoft.com as well.

Ad-aware by Lavasoft
You can download this from CNet Downloads website. Just search for 'Ad-aware'. You can also install a pop-up blocker to prevent popups from bugging you.

disable any type of anti virus you have...then do one of those free on line scans...
bit defender or panda something or other..go to their sites...and do the full system scan they offer for free..that will find and destroy any viruses you might have
then you should think about getting a good anti virus program (Don't download any from illegal sites better pay for it) or get AVG (free anti virus program...and get spy-bot search and destroy (its free) and Ad-aware from lava-soft (also free).. Good luck
