the ones you read about "the top pediatric neurosurgeon in the country" and "world reknowned plastic surgeon", the "leading oncologist" etc. We see a lot of doctors, and they are, for the most part, terrific, but what if I want to see the "BEST" one there is?? Where would I go to find that information?

I really would not rely so much on publications like that. Someone could be in a magazine as the best neurosurgeon but nthey may be cocky and have a terrible bedside manner. I would look at the number of malpractice suits they have had, I would check with the state to see if there are any disciplinary actions and word of mouth is really the best way. If you have friends, ask around and see who they go to and who they like and dislike.

Ask people you know for recommendations. Sometimes the specialist your primary care physician recommends really is not the best (happened to me one time). You might also want to talk to people in offices related to the problem you are having (I called a physical therapy center when I had foot problems) and ask what they have heard from patients. I did that with a foot problem I had and the receptionist gave me the names of several specialists along with what she has heard of their reputation and bedside manner. I ended up going to her top recommendation and had great results. About 4 years later, I am without pain thanks to this specialist.
