Is it possible for each PC on the network to use the internet individually without having a PC as a server. Is it possible to have the router serve as a "server"? We don't trust our IT guy.

a router is not a server and it can only feed so many computers

so if you have less than 5 computers that need to be connected to the internet then you can just use the router

Depends on what you are doing with your server, you can create a workgroup if there isnt too many PC's in it (under 10), and you want to share resources. If you just need an internet connection for each computer all you will need is a router anyways and wont need to have a workgroup or domain configured. Elaborate more on what you need the network to have (shared resources, centralized administration, etc..)
